Hair Dos
- Do cover your hair at night with a nylon, silk or satin scarf or a wave cap.
- Do oil scalp and hair once a week using an essential oil that is appropriate for your hair/scalp type.
- Do groom locks and twists at least every three to six weeks, depending on the hair condition. Too much tension will cause breakage.
Hair Don’ts
- Don’t allow anyone to fire trim your locks. Fire trimming is when a lighter is used to burn excess hair from the locks instead of trimming it.
- Don’t allow anyone to use gel, beeswax, glue, or spritz to lock your hair; you are asking for trouble.
- If you want your hair to be natural and stay natural, don’t allow anyone to press your hair because some parts of your hair will be permanently pressed and will not return to the natural state.
- Don’t allow anyone to press your hair to trim it. If they are knowledgeable about natural hair, then they should know how to trim an afro. Before flat irons and hot combs came about, we as a people had healthy, groomed hair.
- Don’t wash your hair every week or even every two weeks, unless recommended by your stylist or dermatologist. It can cause scalp dryness, dermatitis, etc.
